How To Earn the TOP SAFETY PICK+ Award
The IIHS, or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, operates independently from the federal government’s NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety). Although funded by the insurance industry, the IIHS functions as a non-profit organization dedicated to reducing traffic crashes. It conducts research and studies on both crashworthiness and crash avoidance technology.
In order to be crowned a TOP SAFETY PICK+, a vehicle must excel in all six crash tests. These tests cover various scenarios to evaluate the vehicle's real-world safety performance. The automobile must receive the highest rating of “Good” in each of these tests:
- Small overlap front: driver side
- Small overlap front: passenger-side
- Moderate overlap front
- Side
- Front crash prevention: vehicle-to-pedestrian (day)
- Front crash prevention: vehicle-to-pedestrian (night)
The IIHS also conducts assessments of the headlights and driver-assistance technologies, such as automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assist systems.
