How Honda Sensing in the 2023 Honda Odyssey is Keeping Chicagoland Drivers Safe

Honda Sensing®

Having earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) TOP SAFETY PICK+ award for 2022, the Honda Odyssey is designed to be one of the safest minivans on the roads. For 2023, the Odyssey has seen several upgrades and advances regarding safety and driver assistance.

The 2023 Odyssey comes equipped with an advanced suite of safety and driver-assistance technologies called Honda Sensing®. Designed to prioritize the safety of drivers, these features work together harmoniously to prevent accidents, minimize the severity of collisions, and ensure the well-being of everyone inside the vehicle.

Two Standout Mitigation Systems

One of the innovative features of Honda Sensing® is the Collision Mitigation Braking System™(CMBS). The CMBS employs radar technology and cameras to swiftly detect other vehicles and pedestrians in front of the Odyssey. In the event of a potential collision, the system alerts the driver and can even apply the brakes if necessary to reduce or avoid impact entirely.

At the same time, the road departure mitigation (RDM) system utilizes cameras to detect situations where the Odyssey might veer off the road, such as approaching a curb or driving onto a shoulder. If the RDM system senses an impending departure, it applies the brakes to the appropriate wheels, ensuring the vehicle remains on the road.

Additional Driver-Assistance Technologies

Honda Sensing® also includes adaptive cruise control (ACC) with low-speed follow. ACC employs radar to sense the speed of vehicles in front and adjusts the Odyssey’s speed, accordingly, maintaining a safe following distance.

On top of that, the lane departure warning (LDW) system can recognize when the vehicle starts drifting out of its detected lane without a turn signal, alerting you with visual and audible warnings. Meanwhile, the lane-keeping assist system (LKAS) helps maintain proper lane position and can apply subtle steering torque to assist if the vehicle drifts out of its lane without a turn signal activated.

Other safety features include:

  • Forward Collision Warning (FCW)
  • Traffic Sign Recognition System (TSR)
  • Parking Sensors (standard on Touring & Elite trims)
  • Blind Spot Information System (BSI) w/Cross-Traffic Monitor
  • Auto High-Beam Headlights
