Current Model

2016 Honda PilotThe current 2016 Honda Pilot is packed with smart features. One important part of the Pilot is its powerful and efficient direct injection 3.5L V6 engine that delivers 280 hp, and up to 20 mpg city/27 mpg highway* based on EPA estimates when equipped with front-wheel drive and a nine-speed automatic transmission. The Pilot also offers all-wheel drive for your snowy adventures here in the Chicagoland area.

The Pilot is able to seat up to eight passengers, and the rear two rows of seats fold down to fit an amazing 83.9 cubic feet of cargo. The Honda Pilot is also offered with the latest Honda Sensing driver assistance technology, which provides automatic collision prevention braking. In safety tests, the 2016 Pilot achieved the best possible 2016 Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, as well as the five-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration**.

Reviews

2016 Honda PilotCheck out what the experts are saying about the 2016 Honda Pilot:

Motor Trend: “The powertrain is responsive and hums with a soothing resonance at wide-open throttle. Honda makes some nice engines and this one is a peach,” Edward Loh wrote in the second test drive review of the current Honda Pilot. “My time in the 2016 Pilot largely confirms Evans’ findings. By fixing what was broken with the last-generation Pilot and adding clever touches such as that spacious third-row seat package (the new industry benchmark) and nine-speed transmission, Honda has created the latest, most serious player in the three-row SUV segment.”

Edmunds: “The Honda Pilot is now one of the best large crossovers,” writes Edmunds in its expert review. “Honda focused much of its attention to the Pilot’s interior, which is more modern, more refined and easier to see out of . . . The ride and handling are also improved thanks to a stiffer structure made with more high-strength steel and a weight reduction of about 250 pounds. The smooth ride is worthy of a luxury car, and although handling still isn’t sporty, it’s controlled and the sophisticated all-wheel-drive system provides impressive traction around corners (not to mention snow, mud or sand).”

Kelley Blue Book: “The 2016 Honda Pilot crossover SUV marks the third generation of this popular 3-row family hauler, and it evolves not just to stay with the times, but to remain a step ahead of its ever-tougher competition,” writes Keith Buglewicz for Kelley Blue Book. “The new Pilot also offers electronic driving aids like adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, crash mitigation, and so on. Throw in excellent driving dynamics, and the new Honda Pilot is sure to give its Nissan Pathfinder, Toyota Highlander and Ford Explorer competition night sweats.”

Future Models

2016 Honda PilotThe Honda Pilot was fully reengineered just last year, so we don’t expect major changes in the short term. By 2017 or 2018 you might see some minor upgrades. We tend to look to the Acura lineup for future features and changes in the Honda lineup, since the Honda luxury marque tends to get upgrades first. Some features that are currently offered in the 2016 Acura MDX, the Acura equivalent of the 2016 Honda Pilot include:

  • Fuel saving automatic engine start-stop features
  • GPS-linked and solar-sensing climate control
  • Additional touchscreen dashboard displays
  • Automatic or adaptive LED lighting
  • Remote engine start
  • Ventilated front seats

These are all features that might make their way to the Honda Pilot in the coming years.
