The History of the Honda Odyssey

Many drivers in the Orland Park area have been thoroughly impressed with Honda’s vehicles. The automaker began by creating small vehicles that many Frankfort drivers loved; however, they’ve branched off into larger vehicles such as the Honda Odyssey, a powerful minivan that has turned into an industry leader. Read on to discover some of what the Odyssey has to offer you.

Debut and First Generation

The Honda Odyssey was first conceived during the Japanese economic crisis in the 1990s. As a result, it was necessary for the vehicle to be much smaller than originally anticipated. It was based on the Accord platform and came with a 4-cylinder engine, all-disc anti-lock brakes, a wishbone suspension, and a four-speed automatic transmission.

Second Generation

Each generation of the Odyssey lasts about four or five years, and the second went from 1999 to 2004. The second generation was well known for its unique television campaign, which was influenced by the film 2001: A Space Odyssey. It was also known for being much larger than its predecessor, including sliding rear doors and an updated suspension system, as well as an increase in power to 210 hp courtesy of a V6 engine. During its lifespan, the second-generation Odyssey was eventually available with a navigation system — the first minivan ever to receive such a system.

Third Generation

It was 2005 when the third-generation Odyssey hit the scene. This model took advantage of the ACE body structure, in addition to featuring side-curtain airbags and electronic stability control as standard features (they were not available on previous models). The engine’s output was further increased to 255 hp.

Fourth Generation

It was 2011 when the fourth-generation model became available, and it’s still going strong. Currently in its 2013 model year, this minivan is larger and wider than its predecessor while retaining the qualities that made it great, including impressive handling, excellent power, and a versatile interior.
