The Honda Insight, the United States’ First Hybrid

Orland Park and Frankfort drivers were first introduced to the Honda Insight in 1999 as a three-door hatchback at Community Honda. Amongst a heavily populated market now, the Insight has the honor of being the first hybrid electric vehicle seen in the United States. In its second generation now, Illinois’ Honda lovers can get the 2013 Honda Insight as a five-door hatchback. Let’s take a look at how the Insight made such history.

First Generation: 1999–2006

The first generation Insight was based on Honda’s J-VX concept car and officially premiered in Japan and the United States in 1999. In order to maximize fuel economy, the Insight combines optimized aerodynamics and a lightweight aluminum structure. The 2000 Insight achieved an EPA estimated fuel economy of 61 mpg highway*. The subcompact hatchback vehicle was originally produced to seat two and with a standard manual transmission. The year after it was launched, a second trim option was added along with a CVT. It was powered by a combination of a 1.0L ECA series three-cylinder engine and an electric motor.

Second Generation: 2009–Present

The Insight was completely redesigned for 2009 as a five-door hatchback and with seating for five. It features Honda’s fifth generation Integrated Motor Assist hybrid system, combining a 1.3L SOHC i-VTEC four-cylinder engine with a flat, nickel metal hydride battery pack and CVT.

The 2012 Insight included an updated suspension and a refreshed style. The exterior gained a lower front fascia, new head and taillights, and new wheels. Inside the cabin, the seats were redesigned to add more leg and headroom. New options were also added included a rearview camera and a 16GM flash car system

Starting at just $18,600, the 2013 Insight is an affordable choice for a fuel efficient hybrid. Standard features include automatic climate control, power accessories, and a CD player with auxiliary audio jack. The LX trim adds cruise control and an upgraded stereo. The EX includes heated mirrors, Bluetooth, and automatic headlights.
