The CR-V: The Original Crossover

The funny thing is, while the CR-V has become a household name, auto industry experts don’t really know what “CR-V” means. When it first arrived in showrooms, British marketing types suggested the CR-V stood for “Compact Recreational Vehicle”, whereas Honda’s own materials offer “Comfortable Roundabout Vehicle”, though translational issues and the passage of time leave many still in doubt.

One thing is for certain however, the CR-V continues to be a leader in performance, capability, and cross-town versatility.

History of the CR-V

The CR-V made its debut on the streets of Japan in 1995, and would eventually make its way to North American garages via the Chicago Auto Show in 1996, and finally to dealerships in 1997. As the first SUV developed by Honda in-house — typically working with other brands like Isuzu — it was a simple source of pride, and came in one trim level: the LX.

Bearing in mind that the term “crossover” didn’t even become part of auto industry vernacular until the mid-2000s, the concept of the “compact recreational vehicle” was fairly new; conventional wisdom suggested that there wasn’t a market for a vehicle that offered versatility for everyday drivers (they were already covered by the minivan). In this way, the CR-V was very much a forerunner of the hugely popular modern CUV industry.

The New Face of the CR-V

Over the years, Honda’s CUV darling went through some stark design changes; moving sharply away from the boxy Passport-esque styling, the latest CR-V sports an aggressive and agile exterior. Honda’s advanced drivetrain and fuel-efficiency technology make the CR-V one of the strongest competitors in the CUV segment; the i-VTEC automatic transmission helps produce 185 hp, and at an impressive 31 mpg on the highway*. Throw in Honda’s array of advanced technological features, and Frankfort drivers will find little to not like.
