Community Honda Has the Honda Civic Hybrid

For years, the Honda Civic has been one of the top-selling Honda models and the Civic Hybrid is no different. First introduced in Japan in late 2001, this hybrid model ranks as the second-best selling electric hybrid car in the United States. Drivers in Orland Park and Frankfort should stop by Community Honda and see for themselves what the Honda Civic Hybrid has to offer.

Let’s take a look back and see how the Civic Hybrid has evolved since its debut over a decade ago.

First Generation

Designers based the first generation of this Honda hybrid on the seventh generation of the Honda Civic and introduced it to the US in 2002. It came equipped with a gasoline-electric hybrid system, the first mainstream car from Honda to do so.

This five-passenger sedan came equipped with a 1.3L I4 SOHC engine under the hood that produced 93 hp and a maximum torque of 116 lb-ft for manual transmission and 105 lb-ft for CVT models.

Changes to the Second Generation

While the powertrain of the second generation was similar to the first, there were some changes including a more powerful electric motor, an increase in combined engine power, and discontinuing the use of the manual transmission option, sticking with the CVT.

In addition, while the previous generation was certified as an Advanced Technology Partial Zero-Emissions vehicle in California only, the second generation model was AT-PZEV certified in all 50 states.

Current Generation

The third and most recent generation of Civic Hybrids was introduced in 2011 as a 2012 model. It contains a larger 1.5L engine that produces 90 hp and 97 lb-ft of torque. For the first time, a Honda hybrid vehicle has a 20kW lithium-ion battery. Its ECO Assist technology also helps the driver adopt a more fuel-efficient driving style.
