What is a Crossover (CUV) Compared to an SUV?

2013 Honda Crosstour The last few decades have seen an onslaught of SUVs on the market. It was the fastest growing segment on the market, which made sense; after all, Americans love big cars. When the market took a tumble and gas prices started to skyrocket automakers like Honda started offering more crossover SUVs, or CUVs. So what is the difference between a CUV and an SUV?

Body on Frame Versus Unibody Design

The difference mainly comes down to platform and construction. Your standard SUV is pretty much a truck. Termed “body on frame,” the manufacturer takes a pickup truck platform and then secures a cabin on top that’s a bit more spacious than your standard pickup cabin. That’s an SUV. A crossover SUV utilizes a unibody design, which is how most standard cars are built. They’re built on car platforms and the body is carefully integrated into the platform.

Who Needs a Crossover SUV?

Due to the difference in construction, a CUV yields more benefits for the average driver who is interested in having a vehicle with lots of space. Compared to an SUV, a CUV is much more efficient with its fuel use, handles much better, and offers a smoother ride (SUVs are built for power, not comfort). They also tend to be more affordable than most SUVs. They aren’t as powerful, but a CUV can still do some light towing, if needed.

Who Needs an SUV?

So is there any reason to still need an SUV? Maybe not for the average commuter, but plenty of people still need SUVs. Since an SUV is pretty much just a pickup truck, it offers lots of power and strength. It can hold very heavy cargo and tow just about anything. This makes it well suited to people who live adventurous lives and need to tow or need a powerful vehicle for work. Their usage is more diverse than a pickup because they can also hold a lot of people. For people who enjoy off-roading, an SUV also makes more sense than a CUV.

Whatever your needs are, take a look at our new Honda inventory. You’ll be able to find both traditional SUVs and modern CUVS at our dealership.

Turn Your CR-V Into a Camper With This Tent Accessory

2013 Honda CR-V 4The 2013 Honda CR-V is compact crossover SUV that’s incredibly versatile. You can use it as a family transport, moving cross-country, or road trip adventures. Many families that come to Community Honda like to take their CR-V out for long stretches; the car does come with all-wheel drive, so it can handle those less-than-perfect roads. For those adventurous families, there is a tent accessory you can purchase as well.

The Honda Tent

This is a standalone tent that can fold up into a Honda-logo bag, but the really neat thing is that it attaches to the back of your CR-V. While you’re camping, you have full access and can get in and out of your Honda at will; you can easily fold the seats down and use the back for even more sleep space, which is now ventilated. It’s also a great accessory for outdoor events or tailgating.

The tent itself is 10 feet by 10 feet, which is enough room for up to six people to sleep in. It’s also seven feet tall, so there’s no having to crouch in this thing. The Honda tent is made from waterproof polyester and the bottom is made from polyethylene. Inside, there are spots for lanterns and even a loft to store your stuff. In addition to the connection to the CR-V, there are two doors, three mesh windows, and skylights.

When you’re adventuring during the day and need your car, you can easily disconnect from the tent and leave it up. When you’re done for the day, pull back up and reconnect. You can also use the tent even if you’re on a trip without your CR-V. It’s also not too difficult to fold up and store when you’re ready to leave.

Order Accessories for Your Honda CR-V

If you’d like to order the Honda tent for your CR-V, Community Honda can help. You’ll want to get in touch with our parts department. You can call them, come to the dealership, or even order parts online. There are a whole bunch of other Honda accessories also available, so feel free to stop by the dealership to learn more.

Kelley Blue Book’s Top 10 Family Vehicles Include Three Honda Models

Family collecting new carAt Community Honda of Orland Park, we’re proud to extol the virtues of Honda vehicles throughout the Frankfort area and beyond, and we’ve got the automaker’s full lineup available at our dealership. You don’t need to take our word for it, though — recently, three Honda models appeared on Kelley Blue Book’s list of Top 10 Family Vehicles. So which one is right for you?

The three Honda models on the list include:

  • 2013 Accord – The Accord is fully redesigned for 2013, and is one of the top family sedans out there. Exceptional fuel economy, strong performance, and a refined ride define the Accord. Standard features include dual-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth, a rearview camera, Pandora functionality, and more.
  • 2013 CR-V – The CR-V was redesigned for the 2012 model year, so the 2013 edition just refines this crossover’s winning formula. Strong fuel economy, ample interior space, and a great slate of features are this model’s hallmarks. It’s available with front-wheel or all-wheel drive. With the rear seats up, you’ll have 37.2 cubic feet of cargo space; folding down the rear seats gives you 70.9 cubic feet to work with.
  • 2013 Odyssey – The Odyssey has long been one of the top family minivans on the market, offering a versatile interior, surprisingly agile handling, and more. Being a minivan, the interior is the star of the show, and the Odyssey delivers with enough space for eight passengers across three rows of seating. Removing the second row seats gives you access to a cavernous 148 cubic feet of cargo space, making this vehicle capable as both a people- and stuff-mover.

While drivers’ tastes differs, Kelley blue book’s Top 10 list includes only vehicles that perform highly in areas of comfort, value, and safety, among other criteria.

At Community Honda of Orland Park, we’re pleased that these vehicles have earned the recognition they deserve from Kelley Blue Book, and we’re delighted to offer them all at our dealership. We also have the rest of the Honda lineup, of course. To see it all for yourself, visit us at 8340 W 159th St in Orland Park, IL. We hope to see you soon!

Hybrids, and EVs, and Fuel Cells, Oh My!

2013 Honda Insight

Sometimes, it’s tough to get it all straight when there are so many different kinds of technology coming out all the time. Lucky for you, at Community Honda of Orland Park, we’re experts because Honda has a horse in every race. What we mean is that Honda makes a wide range of low-emission, high-efficiency vehicles. In fact, they’re currently offering a fuel cell vehicle, a natural gas vehicle, an electric vehicle, and a variety of hybrids. Here’s how to keep it all straight:

  • Hybrids – The Honda Insight has been on sale for more than a decade, and now the 2014 Honda Accord Plug-In hybrid is redefining how we think of Hybrid vehicles. These cars use batteries and gas to power electric motors and engines respectively. Both technologies work together to power the vehicle as efficiently as possible.
  • Electric vehicles – An electric vehicle doesn’t have anything to do with gas — it works purely on electric energy stored in a battery. Electric vehicles produce no emissions, and deliver instant torque to the wheels with high-speed electric motors. The new Honda Fit EV uses a 92-kW motor powered by a 20-kWh lithium-ion battery.
  • Natural gas – Honda currently produces a Civic Natural Gas, which effectively uses compressed gas in an internal combustion engine. This is cleaner than gas, and it’s efficient, too.
  • Fuel cells – The Honda FCX Clarity is one of the only fuel cell vehicles on the road in the United States. Fuel cell vehicles use compressed hydrogen to create electric power. Amazingly, this process produces just one waste product: water. That’s right — fuel cell vehicles are effectively zero-emissions. Unfortunately, the infrastructure for hydrogen fueling stations isn’t widespread and the technology is still developing. That’s why the FCX Clarity is only currently available for lease in California and New York as part of a large-scale test program.

Get behind the wheel of one of the efficient and innovative Honda vehicles currently available at Community Honda of Orland Park. We’d love to show you how much you can save by switching to an alternative-fuel technology.

Driving, Smartphones, and Siri

Honda Vehicle

Trying to drive safely and without distractions, while extremely important, is sometimes interrupted by the temptation to check your phone. Especially if you use your phone as a GPS navigation system, it is imperative that you choose a smart place to put your smartphone so that you can stay legally and comfortably hands-free. At Community Honda in Orland Park, we have seen some popular and useful mounting systems for smartphones, so we thought we would give our customers some ideas!

  • Mounts for windshields — This mounting system secures your phone firmly in place on your vehicles windshield using a simple suction cup. This mounting spot makes a lot of sense since it displays your phone at eye level, making it easier to see the map or directions in your phone’s navigation system. Windshield mounts are not expensive and are easy to install and uninstall.
  • Mounts for HVAC vents — Vent mounts are often overlooked, but these kinds of mounting systems usually offer user-friendly installation and also the high position of a windshield location. They also provide an unobstructed view out the windshield, which all windshield mounts can’t do. Their usefulness depends on the arrangement of your vehicle’s HVAC vents, as conventional rectangle-shaped vents with stationary slits are the optimal type for this mounting technique.
  • Mounts for dashboards — In cars with steeply angled windshields, such as the Honda Civic, a windshield mount actually sets the phone further away and makes it more difficult to see. You can use a dash mount to leave your view clear and your phone closer. And, most windshield mounts can be transformed into dash mounts by adding an adhesive disc.

Have No Fear, Siri is Here

To elevate the hands-free aspect of driving into an eyes-free experience as well, Honda is integrating Siri as an artificial assistant into the 2013 Accord’s technology features. If you use the iPhone 4S or iPhone 5, Siri will be able to read and respond to texts, respond to emails, modify your calendar, inform you of weather forecasts, update you on sports results or stock trends and quotes, locate points of interest, read your turn-by-turn directions, and make phone calls through Bluetooth—all through a button on the steering wheel of the car. You will not need to look at or touch your phone at all. Now that is a smart phone, a smart car…a smart idea!

Power, Efficiency, and Technology

Honda has taken some innovative measures to maximize the fuel economy of the new Pilot. The engine features variable cylinder management technology, which allows it to shut off cylinders in order to improve efficiency. The Pilot also receives an aerodynamically-inspired face lift as well as low-rolling-resistance tires in an effort to get the best efficiency. The EPA estimates that 2WD models of the 2013 Pilot will give drivers up to 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.*

In order to improve the handling of the Pilot, Honda has outfitted the 2013 model with a four-wheel independent suspension system to help make a smooth ride. A variable torque management system is standard on all-wheel drive models to help you get the power to the wheels that need it when you lose traction.

Hill start assist is standard across the trims, which is a handy system which retains brake-line pressure after you take your foot off the brake when parked on steep incline. This makes it easy for you to start the car and drive away by preventing you from rolling back when you release the brake.
