What You Need to Know About the All-New 2017 Honda Ridgeline

2017 Honda Ridgeline

2017 Honda Ridgeline

The Honda Ridgeline, the only Honda pickup offering, has been on hiatus for a couple of years while the new model was developed. Now Honda has unveiled the new generation of the Honda Ridgeline at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. We’re here to fill you in on the details of the new 2017 Honda Ridgeline and what you can expect here in Frankfort and Orland Park, IL, so read on if you’re thinking a midsize Honda pickup truck is just what you need.

The Details of the New Honda Ridgeline

The new 2017 Honda Ridgeline has been dramatically reengineered and redesigned for the new model year. The vehicle shares its platform with the Honda Pilot, so it will be provided in both all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive, making it the only available front-wheel drive pickup in North America.

The Ridgeline will also get the same 3.5L V6 engine from the Honda Pilot. Specifications have yet to be released, but expect at least as much output as the Pilot, which makes 280 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. Honda says that the Ridgeline will be able to pull more than the Pilot, which has a maximum towing rating of 5,000 pounds, but specifics are unavailable at this time.

The Ridgeline will continue to get the unique under-bed trunk space for secure, hidden storage. Additionally, the new Ridgeline will offer four feet of space between the wheel wells in the bed – it will be the only midsize truck to do so – so 4-foot sheets of drywall will lay flat. That’s a huge deal for contractors or even DIY-ers.

Honda is aiming at best-in-class fuel economy and best-in-class acceleration figures. You can expect something in the range of 19 mpg city/27 mpg highway* – that’s what the Pilot earns with six-speed automatic transmission, according to EPA estimates.

Finally, the Ridgeline will offer the high-tech Honda Sensing suite of safety technologies, making it one of the only pickups on the road with features like automatic forward collision prevention braking.

REVISED The 2016 Honda Civic Named 2016 North American Car of the Year

2016 Honda Civic Sedan

The 2016 Honda Civic has been named the 2016 North American Car of the Year. This award goes to a single new vehicle every year, and it is selected by a panel of automotive journalists. This year the newly redesigned tenth generation Honda Civic took home the award, beating out the other finalists, which were the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu and the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata. You can find the latest Honda Civic right now here at Community Honda of Orland Park!

2016 North American Car of the Year: 2016 Honda Civic

The 2016 North American Car and Truck of the Year awards are widely respected, at least partially because they’re elected by a panel of judges from around the automotive world – this helps prevent bias. Every year, all-new or significantly redesigned models are eligible, and this year there were 49 eligible vehicles. Late last year the finalists were announced, and this month, the 2016 Honda Civic was announced the winner.

“I think the Civic is improved in every possible metric,” said Tony Swan, a cofounder of the North American Car of the Year award. The North American Car and Truck of the Year awards have been ongoing for 23 years.

The Civic enters its tenth generation with new engineering, new styling, and new technology. It’s lower, wider, and longer, and it offers more space in the cabin and in the cargo area. Perhaps the most important improvement when compared to the outgoing Civic is the advancement in fuel economy made possible by two new engines and better aerodynamic design. The new Civic can now be had with a 2.0L four-cylinder engine or a 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder. This is the first time that Honda has sold a turbocharged engine in the United States.

The 2016 Honda Civic Named Overall 2016 Best Buy by KBB.com

2016 Honda Civic

2016 Honda Civic

The 2016 Honda Civic earned the top honors in the Kelley Blue Book 2016 Best Buy awards, winning both the small car category and the overall award. The 2016 Honda Odyssey, the 2016 Honda Pilot, and the 2016 Honda CR-V also took home the 2016 Best Buy awards in their respective classes. All four Best Buys are available now here at Community Honda of Orland Park. Find out more about why these models won Best Buy awards below!

2016 Best Buy Overall Winner: 2016 Civic

The 2016 Honda Civic took home the Overall Best Buy honor as well as the Small Car Best award in Kelley Blue Book’s annual Best Buy Awards. Previously, the Civic had won the small car category in 2015, but Kelley Blue Book said that the fresh redesign of the tenth generation Civic made it a clear winner overall.

“The completely redesigned 10th-generation Civic has raised the bar for compact cars in general to a new level,” said Kelley Blue Book. “This Japanese compact sedan alters the playing field with its attention to detail, use of high quality interior materials and world-class drivetrain featuring Honda’s first mass production turbocharged engine.”

The Honda Civic is clearly the car to beat in the compact sedan class. Kelley Blue Book pointed out the all new 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder engine, but even the new 2.0L four-cylinder base engine offers more power and more efficiency than the previous generation Civic. The new model is rated by the EPA at 31 mpg city/41 mpg highway* with continuously variable transmission and the 158 hp 2.0L engine, or 31 mpg city/42 mpg highway with the new 174 hp 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder.

But Kelley Blue Book says that these models aren’t even the most exciting bit of the new tenth generation Civic: “The best part of the 2016 Honda Civic story is yet to come as the sedan will soon be joined by other variants, including a coupe, 5-door hatch, and sporty Si and Type R performance models, the latter of which hasn’t been seen in the U.S.”

The 2016 Honda Pilot is a Top Safety Pick+

2016 Honda Pilot

2016 Honda Pilot

The 2016 Honda Pilot is currently available here at Community Honda of Orland Park, and it has been officially rated as one of the safest vehicles on the road today. The new model has earned the best possible Top Safety Pick+ ranking from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). To achieve this ranking, a vehicle must not only score well in crash tests but it must also be available with sophisticated collision prevention technology to stop accidents before they even happen. Of course, the Honda Pilot succeeded at all tests and is currently available with the Honda Sensing package.

A Top Safety Pick+

The 2016 Honda Pilot, redesigned for the 2016 model year, earned the IIHS’ Top Safety Pick+ ranking. The Honda Pilot must be equipped with the Honda Sensing package – standard on the Touring trim level and optional on all other models – to earn the plus. The Top Safety Pick+ ranking requires that a vehicle score a best possible “Good” rating in the moderate overlap front, roof strength, side, and seatbelt and head restraints tests, with at least an “Acceptable” rating in the small front overlap test and at least an “Advanced” in the Front Collision Prevention Category.

The Honda Pilot actually goes above and beyond, scoring the “Good” ranking in all crash tests and a “Superior” in the Front Collision Prevention category when equipped with the Honda Sensing system. The Honda Sensing system successfully stopped the car using automatic braking systems from 12 mph and reduced the vehicle’s speed by half from 25 mph in the IIHS testing, meaning that it would avoid an accident in the real world from those speeds. Honda Sensing includes both front collision warning and automatic collision prevention braking, adaptive cruise control, and a lane departure warning and prevention system.

Honda Plans to Cut Emissions by 50 Percent

American RoadsHonda has made a bold statement. The automaker is planning to cut emissions by half in the next decade, and that means more than just putting efficient vehicles on the road. The new plan is called Green Path, and it means that the company will be making huge sustainability improvements throughout the entire manufacturing process. Find out below how Honda is planning to clean up its act and continue to be one of the greenest automakers in the world!

The Honda Green Path

Honda has a plan to make the whole automotive manufacturing process cleaner. The new initiative focuses on a $210 million investment in the Marysville, Ohio manufacturing plant, which happens to be the largest Honda plant in North America. This will help Honda achieve a voluntary goal of 50 percent emissions reduction by 2050, compared to 2000 levels. This makes Honda the only automaker to voluntarily target such dramatic emissions reductions.

The new plan, called Green Path, aims to reduce the use of what Honda calls “Substances of Concern” in the manufacturing process and scarce natural resources in the production of vehicles. It also plans to significantly reduce the amount of water used in the manufacturing process, as well as C02 emissions caused by transportation of vehicles from plants to dealers. It will also expand the company’s Green Dealer program which incentivizes dealerships that adopt environmentally friendly practices.

“We work every day on these issues. But there’s much more automakers can do beyond fuel efficiency to reduce our environmental impact by adopting energy efficiency and renewable energy throughout our operations,” said Ryan Harty, manager of the Honda Environmental Business Development Office.

The Green Path initiative isn’t just about emissions, however. It’s also about creating cars that are environmentally friendly in every way – from paint to transportation to production, and everything in between.

This rating applies to all models of the 2016 Honda Pilot, which is available now here at Community Honda of Orland Park, your leading Orland Park and Frankfort area Honda dealership.

2016 Honda Pilot Safety Ratings

It received the “Good” score in all crash tests, including the small front overlap, moderate front overlap, side, rollover, and seat and head restraint tests. When equipped with the Honda Sensing technology, the Pilot earned a “Superior” ranking in the Front Crash Prevention category.

The Honda Sensing system is available on the current Honda Pilot and includes features like a forward collision warning, forward collision mitigation braking, lane departure warning, with lane departure mitigation, adaptive cruise control, and more. Forbes

Jason Fogelson wrote at the Forbes Life blog that the “HR-V is good looking, fuel efficient and affordably priced.” He went on to praise the Honda strategy, saying, “By waiting for the market to get established, Honda has had a chance to benchmark the competition and come up with a winner. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a whole lot of HR-V compact crossovers on the road in the very near future.”

Cars.com Review

Cars.com senior editor Mike Hanley said that the 2016 Honda HR-V has “one of the roomiest – and most configurable – interiors in the class.”

Automobile Magazine

Automobile editor Joseph Capparella said, “The more you look at the 2016 Honda HR-V in the context of Honda’s lineup, the more compelling it gets. Honda Pilot Fuel Economy Ratings Released

2016 Honda Pilot

2016 Honda Pilot

The 2016 Honda Pilot should be a huge hit here at Community Honda of Orland Park, at least partially because of its improved fuel economy estimates when compared to the previous model. It also boasts some of the best efficiency numbers in the three-row crossover class thanks to a new engine, new transmissions, and new engineering. Curious about how much gas you can save over your current crossover by purchasing the new Honda Pilot? Find out below!

2016 Honda Pilot Fuel Economy Estimates

The 2016 Honda Pilot is an exceptionally efficient three-row crossover thanks to a new Earth Dreams direct injection V6 engine, a new engine start-stop feature that turns off the engine when stopped to save fuel, and a new available nine-speed automatic transmission in the Touring and Elite models. Here are the fuel economy estimates direct from the Environmental Protection Agency.

  • The base EX Pilot with front-wheel drive achieves 19 mpg city/27 mpg highway/22 mpg combined with six-speed transmission.*
  • All-wheel drive drops those numbers to 18 mpg city/26 mpg highway/21 mpg combined.
  • The Touring and Elite trims with a nine-speed automatic and front-wheel drive achieve 20 mpg city/27 mpg highway/23 mpg combined.
  • Add all-wheel drive to the nine-speed and numbers fall to 19 mpg city/26 mpg highway/22 mpg combined.

All models get a 3.5L V6 engine that cranks out 280 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. This engine utilizes cylinder deactivation to save fuel – this feature shuts off two of the cylinders during light loads and runs on the remaining four. It also uses the Honda exclusive i-VTEC variable valve timing. Honda also managed to shave 300 pounds off the new generation version when compared to the outgoing model.

The new Honda Pilot will beat out almost every other three-row crossover when it comes to fuel economy. It’s better than every non-hybrid version of the Toyota Highlander, the Chevy Traverse, and the Hyundai Santa Fe.
