The 2016 Honda Pilot and the 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe might be at the top of your to-drive list here in Frankfort and Orland Park, IL if you’re in the market for a new crossover with three rows of seating.  While both of these vehicles may check off most of the boxes you’ve got in mind as you’re considering a new crossover, there are some differences that should narrow down your decision. Read on to see how these two vehicles really compare!

Interior Volume

It’s easy to compare seating numbers. The 2016 Honda Pilot will comfortably fit eight people in its three rows. The Santa Fe will only fit seven. You might not need that eighth seatbelt all the time, but when you do, you’ll know it.

It’s not just the number of seats that matters when you’re looking at cabin space, though. The Pilot also offers more headroom, shoulder room, and hiproom across all three rows, as well as more third row legroom. The Pilot also fits a massive 83.9 cubic feet of cargo when you’ve got the seats folded down. The Santa Fe comes close, but ultimately falls short with a maximum cargo capacity of 80.0 cubic feet.

The 2016 Honda Pilot comes with a 3.5L V6 engine with the latest direct injection technology for 280 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. The 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe is equipped with a 3.3L V6 that will only put out 252 lb-ft of torque. When you’re loaded with passengers and cargo you’ll appreciate that extra muscle.

Fuel Economy

The 2016 Honda Pilot provides more muscle and efficiency with an EPA estimate of up to 19 mpg city/27 mpg highway* in the base model with six-speed transmission and front-wheel drive. It can also net up to 20 mpg city/27 mpg highway*, according to EPA estimates, with the nine-speed automatic. The 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe is rated at only 18 mpg city/25 mpg highway.

The 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe came away with a “Marginal” score in the tough Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) small front overlap crash test. Meanwhile, the 2016 Honda Pilot received the best possible “Good” score in that test, along with every other IIHS test. When equipped with Honda Sensing, the Pilot also earns the best possible “Superior” rating in the Front Crash Prevention Category, along with netting the Top Safety Pick+ award.
