The 2016 Honda Civic Type-R: The Fastest Civic Ever

2016 Honda Civic

Honda enthusiasts might be well aware that the Europeans have been getting the hot-rodded Honda Civic Type-R for a few years, while the quickest Civic never made its way to our shores. That’s all about to change when the new 10th generation Honda Civic shows up here at Community Honda of Orland Park. For the first time we’ll get our chance to drive the Type-R throughout the Orland Park and Frankfort, IL area. If you don’t know all the specs, read on to find out more about this new model!

Why Type-R?

Since the next generation 2016 Honda Civic will use the same platform worldwide, that means we get models previously reserved for the Euro-spec Civic. In other words, we get the 2016 Honda Civic Type-R. This model will most likely be sold only in hatchback configuration. The Civic Type-R was sold from 1997 to 2000, and then from 2001 to 2005, but not necessarily here in the United States. The new Civic Type-R recently achieved the fastest front-wheel drive time at the Nurburgring race track in Germany. The introduction also coincides with an effort by Honda to reenter motorsports, like IndyCar and more.

Turbo Power

The new 2016 Honda Civic Type-R receives a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine good for about 310 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque – final numbers could change for the United States market. The Type R should launch from 0 to 60 in a mere 5.7 seconds. Top speed on the track will be 168 mph. A six-speed manual should be the only transmission.

Performance Tuning

In addition to the massive turbo, Honda is also going to upgrade the chassis, brakes, and more, to make the new 2016 Honda Civic Type-R race ready. The new Type-R should get an Active Damper System for optimum traction at high speeds, along with a sophisticated electric steering system to help reduce torque steer by as much as 55 percent. Brakes are also upgraded to a set of high performance Brembo four-piston calipers and 350mm drilled rotors.

Styling and Aerodynamics

The 2016 Honda Civic Type R is a car that can go over 160 mph, so it has to be ready to deal with that speed. That’s where the big wing spoiler comes in – it provides plenty of down force to help the car stay stuck to the ground. It also gets a bevy of aerodynamic styling, venting to keep the brakes and engine cool, and plenty of aesthetic upgrades to make everyone know you’ve picked the fastest Civic.
